The management of drug‐induced gingival overgrowth

Abstract: DIGO is a common clinical problem that often requires intervention. Non-surgical techniques can limit the occurrence of this unwanted affect, reduce the extent of plaque-induced gingival inflammation and reduce the rate of recurrence. Wherever possible this management strategy should be adopted first. Surgical treatment is often the most reliable option and scalpel gingivectomy remains the treatment of choice. Further investigations are required to develop appropriate management strategies to prevent recurrenc… Show more

“…10 The use of mouth rinses is a useful adjunctive self-care approach to the management of gingival enlargement, but it, too, relies on patient compliance; in addition, there can be some side effects with long-term use. 11 Nonsurgical periodontal treatment (including oral hygiene instruction, scaling, root planing, and prophylaxis) is the conventional management approach for gingival enlargement but is not always effective when gingival enlargement is extensive and self-care is compromised. 12 This in turn has led to surgical approaches to the management of gingival enlargement.…”

“…17 Disrupted basal membrane structure in gingival overgrowth tissues is accompanied by a discontinuous collagen type IV expression pattern and decreased laminin5. These findings provided a new additional support for the hypothesis that epithelial plasticity and epithelial to mesenchymal transition promote gingival overgrowth, resulting in compromised basal membrane structure and increased interactions between epithelial and connective tissue layers that contribute to fibrotic pathology.…”
