Background: Sigmoid volvulus (SV) has a considerable geographical variation in its incidence. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of SV in Northern Uganda.Methods:A two year retrospective and one year prospective study in 19 hospitals in Northern Uganda from January 2010 to December 2012 was conducted to determine the incidence of sigmoid volvulus. All patients' records with a diagnosis of sigmoid volvulus were included in the study. Ethical approval was obtained from the IRB Gulu University and Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCS&T). Data analysis was conducted using STATA/IC version 12.1.Results:The incidence of SV in Northern Uganda was 251.8 per 100,000 surgical population in 2 years. Cases were least observed from May to November and most cases were seen in the dry season from December to April. Conclusions:The incidence of SV in Northern Uganda was 251.8 per 100,000 surgical population in 2 years. The proportion of bowel obstructions due to sigmoid volvulus in Northern Uganda was 23.4% and similarly comparable with the proportion found in other African countries and higher than those indeveloped countries.

“…This is a rare form of caecal obstruction caused by folding of the caecum anterior to the ascending colon, resulting in a 'flap valve' that occludes caecal emptying without true twisting; caecal bascule is responsible for 10% of all cases of caecal obstruction. (7,8) Patients with caecal bascule tend to have a better prognosis and lower incidence of vascular compromise of the bowel. An abnormal positional relationship between the superior mesenteric vein and artery, indicative of intestinal malrotation, is also identifiable on CT. (9) Contrary to normal anatomy, the vein is located to the left of the artery.…”

A 46-year-old Chinese woman presented to the emergency department with nausea and abdominal bloating, accompanied by vomiting that had increasingly worsened over the past four days. Apart from previous laparoscopic cholecystectomy and open appendicectomy, she had no other medical comorbidities. Physical examination revealed abdominal distension with central tenderness and active bowel sounds. There was no rebound tenderness or abdominal guarding. She was afebrile and her haemodynamic parameters were stable. Initial blood investigations revealed an elevated total white blood cell count Plain radiography of the abdomen (Fig. 1a) was performed at the emergency department. What do the radiographs show? Based on the patient's clinical presentation and radiographic findings, computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen and pelvis (Figs. 1b & c)

RESUMO: Objetivo: A Síndrome do cólon irritável (SCI) é um distúrbio funcional caracterizado por dor abdominal e mudança de hábito intestinal. .Observando que a Síndrome do ceco móvel (SCM) englobaA síndrome do cólon irritável (SCI) é um distúrbio funcional caracterizado por dor abdominal e mudanças no hábito intestinal, não associadas com qualquer anomalia vista em provas clínicas rotineiras. 1,2 Há duas formas principais da SCI, na dependência do sintoma predominante: SCI com dor abdominal baixa e dispepsia não-ulcerosa em que os pacientes podem ter constipação (SCIC) ou diarréia (SICID), ou pode apresentar constipação e diarréia flutuantes (SICICD). Há, no entanto, um novo subtipo sob investigação denominado de síndrome do cólon pós-infecciosa (SCIPI).
