Every academic field has a history valuable to understanding how a field developed (Ames, 2015). History can offer important insight into times, places, and people that have long been considered less relevant to the present or future. Through re-examination of written histories using new philosophical lenses or analytical approaches, researchers and practitioners are able to prevent stagnancy in historical research and uncover new perspectives or moments in history, specifically Instructional Design and Technology (IDT) history. This critical historiography of IDT's written histories examines how various approaches to writing IDT history produce certain interpretations and understandings of IDT's past. Bài viết sử dụng diễn ngôn về quyền lực của Chủ nghĩa Hiện thực để lí giải nguyên nhân và sự thành công khi Nhật Bản thách thức địa vị bá quyền của các Vương triều Trung Hoa. Kết quả cho thấy từ thế kỉ thứ 2 trước CN cho đến cuối thế kỉ 19, Vương triều Trung Hoa là bá quyền khu vực Đông-Bắc Á. Tuy vậy, Vương triều Trung Hoa cũng luôn phải đối mặt với những thách thức từ các nước trong khu vực. Từ thế kỉ thứ 3 sau CN, sự thách thức của Nhật Bản đã bắt đầu, từ gián tiếp đến trực tiếp, và sau đó ngày một gia tăng về cường độ và đa dạng về hình thức. Đến cuối thế kỉ 19, Nhật Bản đã thành công trong việc xóa bỏ địa vị bá quyền (hegemony) của Vương triều Trung Hoa trong khu vực. Nguyên nhân Nhật Bản thách thức các Vương triều Trung Hoa là tìm kiếm quyền lực nhằm gia tăng các lợi ích của các cá nhân, nhóm chính trị và quốc gia. Có rất nhiều yếu tố khác nhau giúp Nhật Bản thành công, bài viết đề xuất 4 yếu tố là điều kiện địa lí, khoa học kỹ thuật, chiến lược và chiến thuật, và sự suy yếu của Vương triều Trung Hoa như là những yếu tố chính yếu giúp Nhật Bản thách thức thành công.

This report offers the results of a yearlong study conducted by the RAND Corporation, funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, to examine the characteristics of highly competitive societies and apply those criteria to the United States. The report explores the relationship between a nation's social condition and its global standing. Does the character of a society bear on its competitive position? Do its essential societal characteristics decisively influence its ability to generate a potent engine of national power, compete for the respect and allegiance of other countries, sustain technological supremacy, and attract the mostskilled immigrants and global capital? Can we identify which societal characteristics contribute most to competitive success? The study sought to throw light on these questions without offering definitive answers. The eventual goal of this line of work is to perform a societal net assessment of the United States and China and derive a sense of how well equipped the United States is for a long-term competition.The research reported here was completed in January 2022 and underwent security review with the sponsor and the Defense Office of Prepublication and Security Review before public release.
