a b s t r a c tThis study presents bulk-rock major, trace, and platinum-group element data, as well as mineral chemistry for peridotites which form large enclaves (up to 500 Â 1000 m) within Mesoarchaean orthogneisses of the Akia terrane in the Fiskefjord region, southern West Greenland. The largest peridotite body, known as Seqi, contains highly fosteritic olivine with a median Mg# of 92.6 and hosts extensive layers of chromitite, which can be traced for tens of metres with thicknesses of up to 30 cm. Thinner (<100 m thick), but extensive (up to 2000 m long) peridotite sheets are associated with coarse norite and orthopyroxenite with distinct cumulate textures in the Amikoq complex, located a few tens of kilometres south of Seqi. Intercalated amphibolites of tholeiitic basaltic composition show complementary geochemical evolution to the peridotites, consistent with igneous crystal fractionation trends. The U-shaped trace element patterns of the peridotites may either reflect the parental melt composition from which these olivine-rich rocks were derived, or alternatively this feature may be the result of melt-rock interaction. Overall, we interpret the Fiskefjord region peridotites to have formed as ultramafic cumulates derived from Archaean high-Mg, low Ca/Al magmas, although their geodynamic setting remains to be established.

A small area of lithologically similar gneisses also crops out onshore at North Roe/Uyea west of the Caledonian front in Shetland. In the core samples, coarse grained gneissose textures and mineralogies consistent with upper amphibolite facies metamorphism are overprinted by a weak, but ubiquitous, static greenschist facies retrogression. Later structures include widespread epidote-quartz veining, and local developments of mylonite, cataclasite, pseudotachylite and phyllonite. Regions associated with the Rona Ridge oil fields (e.g. Clair, Lancaster) also preserve extensive brittle fracturing and associated low temperature hydrothermal mineralization (quartz, adularia, calcite, pyrite/chalcopyrite) with significant fracture-hosted hydrocarbons. New and published U-Pb zircon analyses from the gneisses offshore give a relatively narrow range of Neoarchaean protolith ages (ca 2.7-2.8 Ga) spread over a geographic area of 60,000 km 2 west of Shetland. Detrital zircon data from overlying Triassic-Cretaceous sedimentary sequences in the FSB suggest an equivalent limited range of Neoarchaean source materials. Hf isotopic data indicate involvement of Palaeo-to Mesoarchaean crustal sources. Overall, our findings suggest that a major phase of Neoarchaean crustal formation and associated high grade metamorphism dominates basement rocks in the region. They are similar in age and lithology to the protoliths of the nearest onshore Lewisian Complex of NW Scotland (Rhiconich Terrane). However, they lack geochronological or textural evidence for the widespread Proterozoic Laxfordian events (ca 1.7-1.8 Ga) which are widespread in Scotland. This suggests that the Precambrian rocks west of Shetland -the Faroe-Shetland Terrane -can be correlated with the Archaean rocks of the Central Greenland-Rae Craton and that a northern limit of Proterozoic reworking lies just offshore from the north coast of Scotland. Meta-igneous lithologies of the Cullivoe inlier in NE Yell, Shetland, have tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite (TTG) chemistry and yield U-Pb zircon crystallization ages of c. 2856 -2699 Ma. Formation was coeval with protoliths of the Lewisian Gneiss Complex and the time of major Neoarchaean crustal growth in the North Atlantic Craton. The adjacent metasedimentary Yell Sound Group accumulated between c. 1019 and c. 941 Ma. The Cullivoe inlier and the Yell SoundGroup were metamorphosed at c. 944 -931 Ma, the former preserving granulite-facies mineral assemblages inferred to be of this age. Similar-aged metamorphic events recorded in other Laurentian metasedimentary successions in the North Atlantic region are attributed to development of the Valhalla orogen along the Rodinia margin. Ordovician (482 ± 30 Ma) and Silurian (428 ± 16 Ma) thermal rejuvenation resulted from successive phases of the Caledonian orogeny during closure of the Iapetus Ocean. The mechanism by which the Cullivoe inlier was emplaced into its current structural setting is uncertain. Either its western or eastern boundary is a major tectonic break, probably an early ductile thrust.
