“…Examining FT's immediate suspects in meristematic flowering processes did not reveal an expression pattern that is similar to FT mRNA (Table S1 and S2 ). Thirteen FT-like genes were identified in tobacco 34 ; out of these 13 genes, NtFT4 and NtFT5 were shown to function as florigen 35 , 36 . RNA–seq of leaf tissue from mature or juvenile leaves showed that NtFT4 is expressed in mature leaves and not in juvenile leaves, while NtFT5 is not expressed in the leaves.…”

“…We, therefore, conclude that there are tissue-specific florigen in tobacco and maybe other plants. Some florigen genes are expressed in the leaves, and some in the stem 35 .…”

“…We showed that NtFT4 is functional as a signaling protein in mammalian cells, and our comprehensive transcriptome analysis in MCF‐7 cells identified a number of potential NtFT4‐specific targets. Although NtFT4 belongs to the specialized FT‐like subclade that has only evolved in flowering plants (Karlgren et al, 2011), tobacco PEBPs can not only be used to modify floral transition and thereby improve yield in tobacco crops (Beinecke et al, 2018; Schmidt et al, 2020), but can also regulate the growth and survival pathways of human cells. The specific and precise nature of NtFT4 activity in human cells is particularly intriguing, and the ability of NtFT4 to regulate intercellular communication, the cell cycle, and their links to protein synthesis should allow for the further modification of this cell line.…”
