The magmatic plumbing of the submarine Hachijo NW volcanic chain, Hachijojima, Japan: Long‐distance magma transport?

Abstract: [1] Recent geophysical observations on basaltic composite volcanoes in Izu-Bonin arc reveal the process of long-distance lateral magma transport within arc crust. To clarify a long-distance magma transport system of the basaltic arc volcano from geological and petrological aspects, we investigated 20-km-long submarine volcanic chains (Hachijo NW chain and Hachijo-kojima chain) and cones on the northeastern slope (NE edifices) as well as subaerial satellite cones nested Hachijo Nishiyama volcano in the northern… Show more

“…In most other cases, the volcanism extends no further than 7.5 km west the main volcanoes. Similar flank volcanism toward the rear-arc in the Izu-Bonin arc is interpreted to result from lateral flow of magma in dykes away from the central volcanoes (Kaneko et al, 2005;Ishizuka et al, 2008).…”

“…1b, 2). These cones form chains aligned NW-SE, extending onto the submarine domain of the edifice and beyond, reaching 22 km NW and 15 km SE from the summit (Ishizuka et al, 2014). Details of the recent eruptive activity (younger than 1.7 ka) of these satellite cones are summarised in Ishizuka et al (2014).…”

“…All the analytical work was conducted at Geological Survey of Japan/AIST. Analytical procedures for the geochemical analysis in this study are the same as reported in Ishizuka et al (2014), which were conducted in the same period. A detailed description of analytical procedures, and all the analytical data are included in the Supplementary data.…”

“…The Izu-Oshima volcano, ∼60 km north of Miyakejima, also has volcanic chains on its flank trending in the WNW-ESE direction in the northwestern flank and in the NW-SE direction in the southeastern flank (Ishizuka et al, 2014). The Hachijojima volcano, ∼100 km south of Miyakejima, has volcanic chains trending in the NW-SE direction (Ishizuka et al, 2008). A regional dike trending in the N45 • W direction intruded the submarine area between Miyakejima Island and Kozushima Island during the 2000 AD eruption ( Figure 1A: Ito and Yoshida, 2002;Yamaoka et al, 2005).…”
