The Lure of the Virtual

Abstract: A lthough organizational scholars have begun to study virtual work, they have yet to fully grapple with its diversity. We draw on semiotics to distinguish among three types of virtual work (virtual teams, remote control, and simulations) based on what it is that a technology makes virtual and whether work is done with or on, through, or within representations. Of the three types, simulations have been least studied, yet they have the greatest potential to change work's historically tight coupling to physical o… Show more

“…In complex, collective work that is more focused on abstracted models and quantification -as for example, in financial trading (Beunza and Stark 2004) or expert systems design (Forsythe and Hess 2002) -the coherence of a provisional settlement may be seen as more critical. This kind of work tends to operate within and on representations of reality, rather than on empirical reality through representations (Bailey, Leonardi, and Barley 2012), where matters of logical integrity tend to matter more than empirical fidelity. When change is significant and/or experience, expertise and interests vary widely (e.g., filmmaking crews (Bechky 2006)), it may be more important for settlements to be acceptable.…”

“…This leads to a certain type of decontextualization of these technological resources, as they get carried from one place to another and utilized in different ways in different contexts [32]. These resources function as toolkits that enable the transfer of application creation capabilities from the platform owners to the third-party developers [33].…”
