The Luminosity of SN 1999by in NGC 2841 and the Nature of “Peculiar” Type Ia Supernovae

Abstract: We present UBV RIJHK photometry and optical spectroscopy of the socalled "peculiar" Type Ia supernova 1999by in NGC 2841. The observations began one week before visual maximum light which is well-defined by daily observations. The light curves and spectra are similar to those of the prototypical subluminous event SN 1991bg. We find that maximum light in B occurred on 1999 May 10.3 UT (JD 2,451,308.8±0.3) with B = 13.66 ± 0.02 and a color of B max − V max = 0.51 ± 0.03. The late-time color implies minimal dust … Show more

“…the absence of a secondary peak in the red passbands, an intrinsically red color and a fast decline rate Δm 15 (B) = 1.76 ± 0.01 (Folatelli et al 2010 reached Δm 15 (B) = 1.90 ± 0.05 (Garnavich et al 2004) and 1.93 ± 0.10 (Taubenberger et al 2008), respectively. SN 2005ke reached a peak magnitude of V = 14.2 (Contreras et al 2010), which coupled to the estimated distance modulus μ = 32.06 ± 0.27 (Wood-Vasey et al 2008) yields an absolute magnitude M V = −17.9 ± 0.3.…”

“…From the classification spectrum it was clear that SN 2005ke was a subluminous Type Ia event (Patat et al 2005), very similar to SN 1999by Garnavich et al 2004). The characteristic Ti ii feature at about 4200 Å was clearly detected in the pre-maximum spectra.…”

“…As with the 1 week premax spectrum of SN 2001el and the early spectrum of SN 1990N, the 6100 Å absorption of SN 1999ee can be fitted with a single broad PV component or an unresolved combination of a PV and an HV feature. For the same reasoning given in the discussion of SN 1990N and SN 2001el and the results of Garavini et al (2007) and Stanishev et al (2007), we use the two components. Figure 14 shows the spectra of the core-normal SN 2003du and the three shallow-silicons of the early sample.…”
