New zircon and apatite (U-Th)/He data (AHe and ZHe) from the crystalline basement of the South American passive margin in southern Brazil present a wide distribution of Phanerozoic apparent ages, recording its prerift evolution. Its geological significance can be investigated by modeling the influence of the accumulated radiation damages on the measured crystals in its He ages during a long upper crust residence. Despite the presence of a significant fault in the studied area, the samples essentially constrain a uniform thermal history for the entire study area. Zircon helium ages spread from 472 to 26 Ma and correlate strongly with the radioactive element content of the crystals. Although the region was probably covered by Paleozoic sediments of the Paraná Basin, the ZHe system experienced a more intense thermal overprint, most likely the onset of the Paraná Large Igneous Province (LIP), causing its dispersion. The nearby intrusion of a feeding system of the LIP, the Florianópolis Dyke Swarm, may have contributed for keeping geothermal gradients elevated for a period long enough to promote the observed reset. After the extrusion of the volcanism, the study area was probably covered by up to 2 km of basalt floods, imprinting temperatures above the AHe partial retention zone on the crystalline basement. These were eroded during rapid cooling between 75 and 55 Ma, as indicated by thermal modeling. Additional analyses with Raman spectroscopy were used for calculating radiation damage ages in the zircon crystals measured for (U-Th)/He, resulting in a comparable set of ages.

The Campo Alegre Basin is a volcano-sedimentary sequence covering an area of about 500 km 2 , located at the northeast portion of Santa Catarina state (Brazil), and formed during the late stages of the Neoproterozoic era. Three main stratigraphic units compose this basin, the lowermost of which is the Bateias Formation, corresponding to the pre-volcanic stage. It is characterized by the fanglomeratic sediments at the basin's northern boundary, which were deposited in a fluvial environment and progressively replaced by fluvial sandstones towards the south. Poorly sorted conglomerates and breccias compound the fanglomeratic facies, which comprises angular to subrounded fragments in a matrix ranging from sand fractions to fragments larger than gravel. The ubiquitous presence of volcanogenic and metamorphic fragments in the fanglomeratic facies strongly suggests that the Piên Magmatic Arc and a volcanic manifestation coeval with the earlier stages of the basin formation were important source areas, as well as the basin basement (the Luís Alves Terrane). In this sense, geological, petrographic, and detrital zircon geochronology data are combined in order to interpret the mechanisms that had acted during the deposition of these sedimentary rocks and to constraint the maximum depositional ages of Bateias Formation at ca. ~606 Ma.

Bauxitic clays, clayey bauxites and bauxites are residual products formed from the weathering of aluminosilicate‐rich parent rocks under wet and warm conditions. These deposits show a complex interplay between remobilisation of pre‐existing kaolinitic soils and depositional micro‐environments.In the southern Ribeira belt, Brazil, a paleoweathering surface developed on the continental shelf of the Capiru Group passive margin strata and on its basement/source rocks. This weathering cycle gave rise to a paleosol profile on the continental domain and a karstic paleotopography on the emerged carbonate shelf. The surface and karstic nets were later caped and filled with Al‐rich materials, typical of remobilised soils, bauxitic clays, clayey bauxites and pods of karst‐type bauxites.The age of the disconformity is Pre‐Brazilian/Pan‐African, implying a Neoproterozoic age for the weathering surface. In this study, we investigate the relationship among disconformities, paleosols and karst topography to better understand the stratigraphic control, chemical composition and mineralogy of the Al‐rich materials. We interpret this horizon as the remnants of a (meta‐)paleoweathering surface that can serve as a valuable key bed for stratigraphic correlation and paleogeographic reconstructions.We propose that the triggering process for the genesis of the paleosol profiles, bauxitic material and bauxite pods was a coupled mechanism between favourable climate and uplift along the northern margin of the Curitiba–Angola craton, creating a karstic topography that allowed the down‐plain transport of Al‐rich materials. In a later stage, these deposits were metamorphosed, developing a series of Al silicates in unusual paragenesis, typical of Al‐rich protoliths.The presence of these paragenesis, along with the recognition of the disconformity–paleoweathering surface pair, could be a useful tool to understand the paleoenvironmental and paleogeographic evolution of highly deformed terrains.
