The ¹³¹I-Hippurate Renogram as a Quantitative Test of Function in Renal Parenchymal Disease

Abstract

¹³¹I-hippurate renograms were performed in 66 patients and the results correlated with BUN, serum creatinine, 24-hour creatinine clearance and PSP excretion at 15 and 60 min.Values for R and L kidneys were averaged for a total of 14 parameters and the means correlated with results of the tests of renal function. The four parameters related to the third or descending segment gave the best correlations; the highest (r = -0.85) was between the time to fall to 50% of the peak counts (T½) and the percent PSP excreted in 60 min. T½ values > 10–13 min indicated impaired renal function. The renogram is a useful measure of renal function when the serum creatinine is <3 mg/100 ml, obstruction and reflux are absent and particularly when accurate collection of urine is difficult.
