Harmonic dynamical behaviour of thallous halides (TlCl and TlBr) have been studied using the new van der Waals three-body force shell model (VTSM), which incorporates the effects of the van der Waals interaction along with long-range Coulomb interactions, three-body interactions and short-range second neighbour interactions in the framework of rigid shell model (RSM). Phonon dispersion curves (PDC), variations of Debye temperature with absolute temperature and phonon density of state (PDS) curves have been reported for thallous halides using VTSM. Comparison of experimental values with those of VTSM and TSM are also reported in the paper and a good agreement between experimental and VTSM values has been found, from which it may be inferred that the incorporation of van der Waals interactions is essential for the complete harmonic dynamical behaviour of thallous halides.

A critical study of all the three extensions of the shell model i.e. the breathing shell model (BSM), the deformable shell model (DSM), and the three-body force shell model (TSM) is further carried out for cesium chloride type ionic crystals on the similar pattern as reported earlier. These models are applied t o study comparatively the dynamical behaviour of cesium chloride (CsCI) and thallous bromide (TIBr). The results so obtained, again confirm the superiority of TSM over DSM and BSM, not only in explaining the phonon dispersion curves but also for interpreting the infrared (IR) and Raman spectral peaks and Debye temperature variations.Eine kritische Untersuchung aller drei Erweiterungen des Schalenmodells, das ,,breathing" Schalenmodell (BSM), das deformierbare Schalenmodell (DSM) und das Drei-Korper-Krafte-Schalenmodell (TSM), wird weiterhin fur Ionenkristalle vom Casiumchloridtyp nach dem schon friiher veroffentlichen Muster durchgefuhrt. Diese Modelle werden zum Vergleich des dynamischen Verhaltens von Casiumchlorid (CsCI) und Thalliumbromid (TlBr) benutzt. Die so erhaltenen Ergebnisse bestatigen erneut die ifberlegenheit des TSM uber DSM und BSM, nicht nur bei der Erklarung der Phononendispersionskurven sondern auch fur die Interpretation der Maxima der Infrarot (1R)-und Ramanspektren sowie der Anderungen der Debye-Temperatur.

The van der Waals three-body force shell model (VTSM) has been developed by modifying the three-body force shell model (TSM) for the lattice dynamics of ionic crystals with cesium chloride (CsCl) structure. This new model incorporates van der Waals interactions along with long-range Coulomb interactions, three-body interactions and short-range second neighbour interactions in the framework of a rigid shell model (RSM). In the present paper, VTSM has been used to study the lattice dynamics of thallous bromide (TlBr), from which adequacy of VTSM has been established. A comparative study of the dynamical behaviour of TlBr has also been done between the present model and TSM, the model over which modification has been made to obtain the present model VTSM. Good agreement has been observed between the theoretical and experimental results, which give confidence that it is an appropriate model for the complete description of ionic crystals with CsCl structure.
