The long-term impacts of hearing loss, tinnitus and poor balance on the quality of life of people living with and beyond cancer after platinum-based chemotherapy: a literature review

Abstract: Purpose To elucidate the long-term impacts of hearing loss, tinnitus and balance in people living with and beyond cancer (LWBC) treated with platinum-based chemotherapy (PBCT). Methods A literature search was conducted between March and June 2022 using PubMed, Web of Science and Google Scholar. Full-text papers in English were included. Articles explored the impacts of hearing loss, tinnitus and balance and discussed them in the context of treatment. If PB… Show more

“…Hair cells are the most common cochlear cell type to be affected by cisplatin, but cells of the stria vascularis, spiral ganglion neurons, and supporting cells have also been reported to suffer deleterious effects ( 5 , 6 ). Cisplatin-induced hearing loss negatively impacts an individual’s quality of life, leading to depression and social isolation ( 7 ), and impedes the development of language skills in young children treated with cisplatin ( 1 3 ). There is a dire clinical need to develop drugs that can protect from this highly common side effect of cisplatin treatment.…”

“…15 High-frequency audiometry is regarded as a significant technique for identifying and monitoring hearing loss and detecting cisplatin ototoxicity, with critical frequencies of 12 kHz and 14 kHz. 5,30,31 All of this scientific evidence analysis emphasizes the significance of regular audiological monitoring during and after platinum-based treatment, and it is also encouraged to perform self-reported hearing impairment during and after chemotherapy. 15…”

“…The neurotoxicity of chronic stress from cancer and cancer treatment has been reported ( 10 ). Also, chemotherapy or radiation can result in loss of hearing and tinnitus ( 11 ). A correlation between hearing loss, depression, and cognitive decline has been reported ( 12 ), with lower cognitive performance among cancer survivors occurring up to 20 years post-treatment ( 13 ).…”
