The long-term effect of oral isotretinoin therapy on macula ganglion cell complex thickness

Abstract: One-year systemic use of isotretinoin had no significant effect on the thickness of macula ganglion cell. Macular ganglion cell analysis is useful for determining and following the toxic effects of systemic drugs on the retina. However, it is more rational to consider it as an adjunct to electrophysiological testing rather than used alone.

“…Besides from damage to the OS, retinal toxicity, neuroophthalmological disorders, decreased dark adaptation and color vision, and cataract formation have also been linked to isotretinoin use, however, information is scant. 5,24 Studies evaluating the nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell complex (GCC) thickness of the retina and macula, respectively, have yielded unrewarding results.…”

“…29 Nevertheless, other studies evaluating the RNFL and GCC thickness after systemic isotretinoin use for 6 and 12 months, respectively, found no significant differences. 5,30 Other retina-related complications including vascular occlusions, 31 premacular hemorrhage, 32 serous retinal detachment, 33 and vitreous disturbance have been reported. 24 However, none of the side effects mentioned above fulfills the WHO criteria mentioned above to be considered as "certain."…”
