The long-run relationships between energy efficiency and environmental performance: Global evidence

Abstract: Owing to recent climate change concerns, the interaction between energy and environmental governance has received greater attention. Therefore, this study investigates the causal relationship between energy efficiency and environmental performance for 129 countries, using the panel cointegration and panel-based error correction models for the period 2002–2012. Our results corroborate that there exists a long-term equilibrium cointegrating relationship between energy efficiency and environmental performance, an… Show more

“…Notably, the main notion of the Fourth Basic Plan is to shift the new and renewable energy sector from government control to a market orientation. To ensure this, the Basic Plan suggests increasing proactive private investment 6 in this industry and its expansion into foreign markets. Specifically, the Plan includes various deployment and infrastructure programs 7 to accomplish these goals, which mirror the Act on renewable energy.…”

“…Renewable energy is recognized as an alternative energy source that can overcome the shortcoming of fossil fuels. [5][6][7] The expansion of renewable energy in terms of the ratio of renewable energy to total energy consumption raises a new question about the causal relationship between renewable energy and economic growth. Knowledge on this relationship can provide policymakers with new and improved policy ideas.…”

“…When cointegration is established, the second step is to obtain the long-run and short-run models based on the following tentative models for ARDL level relation (shown as equation (2)). The order of an ARDL p; q; r; s; v ð Þ specification in the level form of variable EX t ; FDI t ; CO2 t ; EE t ð Þ are restricted to two in line with the principle of parsimony.…”

“…According to population projections, this ratio is estimated to increase to 10.2% in 2023, 20.8% in 2050, and 27.7% in 2075. [8][9][10] Energy is one of the most critical resources for human survival and is the power driving economic development to promote social progress, 11 but at the same time the rising level of global warming, which has increasing effects and is sourced by climate change, indicates danger alert for the common future of mankind. 12 Hence, reducing the electricity generation becomes more and more important.…”
