The Long-Range Biomimetic Covert Communication Method Mimicking Large Whale

Abstract: Short-range biomimetic covert communications have been developed using dolphin whistles for underwater acoustic covert communications. Due to a channel characteristics difference by range, the conventional short-range methods cannot be directly applied to long-range communications. To enable long-range biomimicking communication, overcoming the large multipath delay and a high degree of mimic (DoM) in the low-frequency band is required. This paper proposes a novel biomimetic communication method that preserves… Show more

“…Conventional underwater acoustic systems generally utilize LFM to measure the multi-path delay because the auto-correlation function of LFM is the Kronecker-delta function [30,31]. The proposed method generates a data signal using an LFM to utilize its auto-correlation characteristic, and the data signal can be utilized to estimate the multi-path delay using a state-of-the-art multi-path estimating scheme.…”

“…In Equation ( 9), h l (t) h l−1 (−t) shows a similar effect to performing channel equalization, and it becomes approximately the Kronecker-delta function (δ(t)) because we assumed (h l (t) ≈ h l−1 (−t)) [31][32][33]. Therefore, when two symbol pairs (s k , s k+1 and s m , s n ) are the same, R c becomes the maximum value and satisfies Equation (7) in the long-range UWC channel.…”
