The location by early auditory evoked potentials (EAEP) of acoustic nerve and brainstem demyelination in multiple sclerosis (MS)

Abstract: Tone pips of suprathreshold intensities elicit an acoustic nerve response (I) and six low amplitude brainstem potentials (II-VII) during the initial 10 ms. Seven waves were studied in 40 control subjects and 5 waves (I-V) in 47 patients with MS. The results suggest involvement of the auditory pathway of 24 of 27 patients in the clinically "definite", of 5 of 9 cases in the "probable" and in none of 5 patients in the "possible" MS groups. EAEPs were normal in 6 cases with a spinal form with one exception where … Show more

“…BAEPs [15] were recorded utilizing at least 1000 rarefication and condensation clicks at 70 dB above the sensory threshold. The clicks were delivered monaurally by earphones at a rate of 10 Hz and recorded by electrodes on the ipsilateral mastoid with the vertex electrode (Cz) reference.…”

“…Normal values for latencies: SP1 < 17.1 ms, SP2 < 57.9 ms s Auditory evoked potentials (AEP) Early AEPs were recorded by mastoid-to-vertex (Cz, according to the 10/20 system) leads. At least 1000 rarefaction and condensation clicks of 70 dB above the sensory threshold were delivered monaurally by earphones at a repetition rate of 10 Hz. AEP latencies were measured to the positive peak of each wave from I to V. Our previously reported normal values for absolute values and III-V interpeak latencies were used for evaluation [24].…”
