Cloud computing has emerged as the primary choice for developers in developing applications that require high-performance computing. Virtualization technology has helped in the distribution of resources to multiple users. Increased use of cloud infrastructure has led to the challenge of developing a load balancing mechanism to provide optimized use of resources and better performance. Round robin and least connections load balancing algorithms have been developed to allocate user requests across a cluster of servers in the cloud in a time-bound manner. In this paper, we have applied the round robin and least connections approach of load balancing to HAProxy, virtual machine clusters and web servers. The experimental results are visualized and summarized using Apache Jmeter and a further comparative study of round robin and least connections is also depicted. Experimental setup and results show that the round robin algorithm performs better as compared to the least connections algorithm in all measuring parameters of load balancer in this paper.

Summary Cloud computing is an innovative computing paradigm designed to provide a flexible and low‐cost way to deliver information technology services on demand over the Internet. Proper scheduling and load balancing of the resources are required for the efficient operations in the distributed cloud environment. Since cloud computing is growing rapidly and customers are demanding better performance and more services, scheduling and load balancing of the cloud resources have become very interesting and important area of research. As more and more consumers assign their tasks to cloud, service‐level agreements (SLAs) between consumers and providers are emerging as an important aspect. The proposed prediction model is based on the past usage pattern and aims to provide optimal resource management without the violations of the agreed service‐level conditions in cloud data centers. It considers SLA in both the initial scheduling stage and in the load balancing stage, and it looks into different objectives to achieve the minimum makespan, the minimum degree of imbalance, and the minimum number of SLA violations. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed system compared with other state‐of‐the‐art algorithms.

Cloud computing requires more reliable, efficient and scalable load balancing algorithm to survive. As one of the main challenges in cloud computing, load balancing facilitate dynamic workload across multiple nodes ensuring that no single node get overloaded. With proper load balancing, resource consumption is maintained at minimum level, enabling scalability, avoiding bottleneck and overprovisioning etc. In this paper, systematic review on existing load balancing techniques currently prevalent in cloud computing was carried out. Load balancing metrics; Response time, Performance, Resource Utilization, Throughput, Cost Overhead, Scalability, Fault Tolerant and Migration Time were used to evaluate the existing techniques. Findings show that the existing techniques mainly focus on reducing response time, completion time, cost and improving throughput. Neither of the techniques was able to unveil efficient load balancing of task scheduling for single and federated cloud environment. However, research such as load balancing of energy consumption, server consolidation, Virtual Machine Migration, are not taken into consideration by the existing techniques. Future research is to unveil efficient multi-objective load balancing of tasks scheduling algorithm with quality of service improvements for homogeneous and federated heterogeneous cloud environment.
