The lithium content ofω Centauri

Abstract: Context.A discrepancy has emerged between the cosmic lithium abundance inferred by the WMAP satellite measurement coupled with the prediction of the standard big-bang nucleosynthesis theory, and the constant Li abundance measured in metal-poor halo dwarf stars (the so-called Spite plateau). Several models are being proposed to explain this discrepancy, involving either new physics, in situ depletion, or the efficient depletion of Li in the pristine Galaxy by a generation of massive first stars. The realm of po… Show more

“…The two temperature scales are in excellent agreement, with a mean difference of −6 ± 5 K (σ Δ(T eff ) = 60 K). The accuracy of the T eff determination using H α line fitting is usually, however, of the order of ∼150 K and is dominated by uncertainties in the continuum normalization and/or in the correction of the blaze function of the spectrograph (Bonifacio et al 2007;Sbordone et al 2010;Monaco et al 2010). In the following we will adopt 150 K as uncertainty on the T eff determination.…”

“…It is interesting in this context that all of the GCs studied so far (ω Cen, NGC 6752, NGC 6397, 47 Tuc, M 4, see Monaco et al 2010;Mucciarelli et al 2011, and references therein), present -at least in their FG of stars -a Li content comparable to that of warm metal-poor halo dwarfs, i.e. the socalled Spite plateau (Spite & Spite 1982;Sbordone et al 2010).…”

“…Clearly, the chemical evolution of Li is far from being straightforward, as the remarkably constant Li abundance with metallicity observed by Monaco et al (2010) in ω Cen also shows. In addition, it is important to bear in mind that it is not straightforward to interpret Li abundance observations, given the many ill-constrained physical mechanisms that may play a relevant role in defining surface Li abundances in present-day stars (e.g., Mucciarelli et al 2011b).…”

“…After the pioneering works with 4 m class telescopes (Pasquini & Molaro 1996, 1997Castilho et al 2000), the study of Li in globular clusters (GC) has received a tremendous boost with 8 m telescopes (Boesgaard et al 1998;Thévenin et al 2001;Bonifacio et al 2002Bonifacio et al , 2007Pasquini et al 2004), and, with the advent of multi object spectrographs, many un-evolved and evolved stars have been observed for Li in the nearest GCs (Korn et al 2007;Lind et al 2009;D'Orazi & Marino 2010;Monaco et al 2010).…”
