The link between perceived characteristics of neighbourhood green spaces and adults’ physical activity in UK cities: analysis of the EURO-URHIS 2 Study

Abstract: This study showed that the presence of green space may not itself encourage the necessary preventative health behaviours to tackle physical inactivity in urban populations. Development of more appropriate green spaces may be required. Further research is needed to shed light on the types green spaces that are most effective.

“…Studies analyzing the associations between the residential availability of GS and moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) are inconclusive. Some demonstrated that GS availability is associated with the greater MVPA [26,35], however, other studies did not confirm those findings [14,29]. Thus, one of the aims of the present study is to provide more knowledge on this issue.…”

“…It has been concluded that availability of GS in living environment is associated with the higher GS contact especially in high urbanization cities [14,25,26,28]. However, studies have suggested that proximity to GS did not affect engagement in PA [29]. In contrast, studies have demonstrated that perceived availability of GS, perception of safety and green qualities were associated with the greater exposure to and exercise in GS [26,30,31].…”

“…Structural green space characteristics have impacts on wellbeing and stress through cascading effects on perceived green space safety, walkability and physical activity (Ali et al, 2017;Weimann et al, 2017). High green and low green may also differ in their allergenic potential.…”
