The likelihood of total knee arthroplasty following arthroscopic surgery for osteoarthritis: a systematic review

Abstract: BackgroundArthroscopic surgery is a common treatment for knee osteoarthritis (OA), particularly for symptomatic meniscal tear. Many patients with knee OA who have arthroscopies go on to have total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Several individual studies have investigated the interval between knee arthroscopy and TKA. Our objective was to summarize published literature on the risk of TKA following knee arthroscopy, the duration between arthroscopy and TKA, and risk factors for TKA following knee arthroscopy.MethodsW… Show more

“…Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a common and frequently occurring disease among the elderly; about 14 million Americans are subjected to osteoarthritis of knee (Winter, Collins, & Katz, ). According to the Census Bureau, the knee OA proportion of the U.S. population comprising of African Americans and Hispanics would be projected to rise from 38% in 2014 to 56% of the total population by 2060 (Karmarkar et al, ).…”

“…Comparatively, the mean duration to knee arthroplasty following arthroscopy reported in a meta-analysis of 20 studies was 3.4 years. 15 In another study which closely resembles our patient population in terms of severity of knee osteoarthritis, the mean duration to knee arthroplasty was 4.4 years. 19 The patients in our study had a better mean survivorship following arthroscopic surgery compared to that reported in Western studies.…”

“…In a study by Winter et al, patients with a mean age of less than 65 had a yearly incidence of knee arthroplasty of 1.87% compared to 5.13% in those with a mean age of more than 65. 15 In our study, the mean age at which patients underwent arthroscopic surgery was 60 years. This could explain the slightly older age at which subsequent arthroplasty was performed.…”

“…About 2 million 4]. A recent systematic review has indicated an annual rate of progression to TKA of 2.6% [5]. Thus, it is inevitable to perform a TKA in a patient with a prior KA for contemporary arthroplasty surgeons.…”
