Abstract

Although this is a sole-authored book, several people and institutions helped make it possible, and I am happy to recognize them here. It was Idesbald Goddeeris who first suggested that I publish this study, and for that I am much obliged. The research that went into this book was supported by funding and sabbatical leave from Berry College, which made multiple trips to Belgium possible. During my visits to Brussels, Meredith and Adolf Spangenberg were welcoming and generous to a fault, always. A 2016 Festschrift conference in honor of John M.
