The learning curve of retinal detachment surgery

Abstract: Purpose To investigate the learning curve of vitreoretinal (VR) surgeons beginning training in retinal detachment (RD) surgery. Methods The files of all consecutive patients undergoing VR surgery for uncomplicated RD between Jan 2005 und Mar 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. Successful outcome was defined as no retinal redetachment within 3 months after surgery. Results Ten surgeons started their VR career during … Show more

“…A Japanese study showed the primary surgical success rate within 6 months was 90.8(2,519/2,775) ( 18 ). A German study showed the primary success rate after one operation was 90% (3,420/3,786) ( 19 ). An UK study showed the primary success rate with a single procedure was 86.8% (302/348) ( 16 ).…”

“…In previous retrospective reviews of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) surgeries performed by beginner surgeons, the primary success rates were 70% [ 14 ], 75% [ 23 ], and 80% [ 13 ], and they improved and then stabilized after about 200 operations [ 13 ] or 2 years [ 14 ]. In another study, the learning effect was reduced by half after about 500 vitreoretinal surgeries [ 24 ].…”

“…While several approaches have been used to study the learning curve of phacoemulsification [ 8 , 9 , 10 ] and refractive surgery [ 11 , 12 ], few authors have studied the learning curve of PPV, usually for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment surgery [ 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 ], and even fewer have assessed the progress in gaining experience and skills of young surgeons attempting TRD surgery [ 17 ].…”

“…In fact, female vitreoretinal surgeons have been shown to have a faster learning curve than their male peers in training for retinal detachment surgery. 13 Thus, while this work focused on the representation of women in retina society membership, leadership, and achievement, we also want to acknowledge the many potential benefits of an increasing proportion of women in the specialty at large.…”
