The learning continuum of ecology based on teachers’ opinion about student’s level of competence and specific pedagogical learning material

Determining the level of difficulty and student development is important in the learning continuum, especially the anatomical and physiological aspects. This study aimed to collect teachers' opinions about the learning continuum of anatomical and physiological aspects based on its difficulty level. This survey research was conducted in the cities of Bantul and Yogyakarta using a questionnaire. The selection of respondents through convenience sampling, totaling 111 teachers consisting of 68 junior high school science teachers and 43 junior high school biology teachers. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to determine the mode of teachers’ opinions. The results of this study indicate that the learning continuum in grade X of senior high school based on difficulty level in anatomical and physiological aspects, especially multicellular and unicellular concept has not yet been formed, with the difficulty at level 4. Therefore it is necessary to the provision of subject matter is sorted from easy to difficult and adjusted to the level of development of students at each level.

Teachers’ opinion about learning continuum in evolution based on the material complexity level

Evolution is one of biology topics which covers a wide range of material taught across education levels. Unfortunately, the material has not been arranged according to its complexity level and students’ development. This study aimed to collect teachers' opinions about the learning continuum of evolution material based on its complexity level. This descriptive research was conducted in Bantul and Yogyakarta Cities by distributing questionnaires. As many as 68 junior high school (JHS) teachers and 43 senior high schools (SHS) teachers were selected through convenience sampling. The data gained was analyzed using descriptive statistics to determine the mode of practitioner opinion. The results showed that the JHS teachers thought that evolutionary material had a complexity level of 3 (quite complex) to level 5 (very complicated) that could be taught in class VII & IX as well as at higher level (XII SHS). Furthermore, the SHS teachers argued that the evolution material from level 3 (quite complex) to level 4 (complex) could be taught in XII class. Further research needs to be carried out using more complete instruments with more detailed indicators.

Developing A Learning Continuum on Ecological Aspect from Elementary to Senior High School Based on The Opinions of Biology Education Experts

This research uses survey method aiming to investigate the opinions of biology education experts toward the teaching and the assessment of ecological aspects previewed from the level of competency and characteristic of specific pedagogical materials in order to develop the learning continuum of ecological aspects from elementary to senior high schools was conducted in 2018-2019. The population used in this research was hypothetical population which consisted of the all experts of biology education who taught in public and private universities in Indonesia. The sample used in this research was convenience sample consisted of 85 experts of biology education who taught at 18 public and private universities in Yogyakarta, Central Java, East Java, West Java, and Jakarta determined by using purposive technique. The instrument used was confirmatory assessment questionnaire learning continuum based on mastery of ecological aspects which has been arranged by Subali et al. (2016) and the validty was well examined through the focus group discussion activity by 3 lecturers of UNY and 5 lecturers of UNS. The result of this research showed that learning continuum of ecological aspects according to the biology education experts’ opinion, start be taught and assessed in the fourth and fifth grade of elementary school with the competency level C1 and C2. Then, it will be continued to the higher level in seventh grade of junior high school with the competency level C2 and tenth grade of senior high school with the competency level C3.
