The Leaf Essential Oil ofMomordica charantiafrom Nigeria is Dominated by Geijerene and Pregeijerene

Abstract: The leaf essential oil of Momordica charantia was obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The leaf oil was rich in geijerene (11.2 %), pregeijerene (27.1 %), α-pinene (14.0 %), β-pinene (7.1 %), (E)-caryophyllene (4.6 %), and germacrene D (8.6 %); remarkably different from previous reports of this plant.

“…Furthermore, 3,10-Dihydro-1,4-dimethylazulene ( 95), a labile tri-nor-sesquiterpene biosynthetic precursor of 1,4-dimethylazulene (94), was first isolated from a cell culture of the liverwort Calypogeia granulata [239,272]. Its absolute stereochemistry was determined by the theoretical calculation of its circular dichroism spectra and verified by the synthesis of model compounds [273].…”

“…Similar to pregeijerene ( 2 ), compound 3 has also been isolated from many Pimpinella species [ 42 ] and exhibits antimicrobial and antioxidant activity [ 52 ]. It has also been found in Momordica charantia [ 94 ] and in the essential oil of Eupatorium odoratum Linn. leaves and was found to be active against E. coli and B. subtilis [ 95 ].…”
