The last glaciation of Germania Land and adjacent areas, northeast Greenland

Abstract: A profile across the unglaciated coast of northeast Greenland at 77"N was studied with regard to the Quaternary stratigraphy and glacial history. The Germania Land peninsula is characterised by till-covered lower ground which contrasts sharply with the blockfields and extensive gelifluction deposits of its higher altitudes. Two glaciations are distinguished. The older one extended over the entire area and had its margin on the continental shelf. The younger one, of Late Weichselian age, reached the present coa… Show more

“…Similar beds are found at many other sites along the south and west coast of Jameson Land (Fig. 4, Hansen et al 1994;Israelson et al 1994;Landvik et al 1994;Lysd & Landvik 1994b;Tveranger et al 1994). Correlation between the sites is provided by the faunal assemblages and luminescence dates.…”

“…On Germania Land, 800km north of Scoresby Sund, the maximum glaciation is recorded by block fields with scattered erratics on high mountain plateaux and islands off the coast (Landvik 1994). This event has not been dated, but provisionally we propose correlation with the Scoresby Sund glaciation.…”

“…Although some direct historical measurements are available of some well-known gnammas (Worth, 1953), the chronological control of these morphologies is usually related to the age of the stabilization of the surface where the depressions are sculpted. Thus, the presence of gnammas and other weathering features have been used in glaciated landscapes to differentiate glacier advances (Dahl, 1966;Ives, 1978;Nesje and Dahl, 1990;Landvik, 1994). However, in areas such as Scandinavia that were covered by broad ice sheets, the presence of nunataks (isolated bedrock peaks surrounded by the glacier) could preserve some weathering features.…”
