The largescaled terapon Terapon theraps: a new Indo‐Pacific fish in the Mediterranean Sea

Abstract: A specimen of the largescaled terapon Terapon theraps was recorded for the first time from the Mediterranean Sea. The finding of T. theraps in the northernmost part of the Mediterranean Sea raises the number of Lessepsian migrant species to at least 68 and in the Adriatic Sea to at least 11.

“…This species probably arrived in the northern Adriatic sea by following a slow boat or together with pelagic jellyfishes, floating wrecks or drifting algae. More recently (2007), Terapon theraps Cuvier, 1829 was caught in the waters off Piran (Slovenia) (Lipej et al, 2008). The orange-spotted goby Gobius kolombatovici Kovačić & Miller, 2000 (Actinopteri: Perciformes: Gobiidae) was very recently described from the northern Adriatic Sea (Island of Krk, Croatia) (Kovačić & Miller, 2000).…”

“…Adding Fistularia commersonii (LIPEJ et al, 2008) is of particular interest since its record was the first for the Mediterranean; furthermore, it was found at great distance from its usual distribution area. Similar are the cases of Pampus argenteus and Epinephelus coioides.…”
