The lactam‐amino acid equilibria for ethylpyrrolidone and polyvinylpyrrolidone

Abstract: The lactam‐amino acid equilibria of N‐ethylpyrrolidone and poly‐N‐vinylpyrrolidone were studied in dilute aqueous solutions and in n‐butanol at 100°C. and compared with earlier investigations of similar systems. It was found that with in the intermediate pH range the lactam is the predominant form. Below and above certain critical acid and alkaline pH values increasing amounts of amino acid will be formed. It has been shown that these critical pH values are closely related to pK1 and pK2 of the corresponding a… Show more

“…PSf is highly hydrophobic and does not swell appreciably. When PSf is used to fabricate medical devices such as dialysis membranes, either the whole device or only its surface needs to be covered with a hydrophilizing agent such as PVP, which is an amphiphilic and chemically inert polymer having a lactam with an internal amide bond [4].…”

“…Because of remarkable amphiphilic properties, good solubility in water and many conventional organic solvents resulting in high biocompatibility, adhesive and binding power, this non-toxic compound belonging to polymeric lactam with an internal amide group [1] is applied as amorphous binder for many drug substrates to form the tablets of promising pharmaceutical functionality [2,3].…”
