The LAB-Net Soil Moisture Network: Application to Thermal Remote Sensing and Surface Energy Balance

Abstract: A set of Essential Climate Variables (ECV) have been defined to be monitored by current and new remote sensing missions. The ECV retrieved at global scale need to be validated in order to provide reliable products to be used in remote sensing applications. For this, test sites are required to use in calibration and validation of the remote sensing approaches in order to improve the ECV retrievals at global scale. The southern hemisphere presents scarce test sites for calibration and validation field campaigns … Show more

“…Meteorological stations data were obtained from LAB-network [31], located across the valley over three crops, as was described in Mattar et al [31] and Olivera-Guerra et al [27]. Crop coefficients (kc) used are in concordance with those used by Olivera-Guerra et al [27] for olives and vineyards (Table 1), and the pomegranates kc values were adapted from Franck [32] and Otárola Aliaga [33], which estimated kc values to arid and semiarid conditions in Chile.…”

“…A33 LAB-net LAB-net was created as the first soil moisture network in Chile to support remote sensing research on drought and water use conflicts (Mattar et al, 2016). Three stations measuring soil moisture, soil temperature, precipitation, and air temperature between 2014 until 2017 over various land cover types have been included in the ISMN.…”

“…Air temperature (T a ), Relative Humidity (RH) and Wind speed (u) measured at 2 m above the surface were obtained from 20 agrometeorological stations of the Chilean Agricultural Research Institute (INIA; available at: http://agromet.inia.cl/. Moreover, the automated weather station at Oromo Calibration Site (OCS) from LAB-Net [47] was used to validate surface temperature (T s ) and actual evapotranspiration (ET a ) estimates. Unlike the agrometeorological stations, this station also records radiative variables of the surface energy budget such as infrared temperature (TIR), Net Radiation (R n ) and soil heat flux (G).…”
