The Klagenfurt Basin in the Eastern Alps: an intra-orogenic decoupled flexural basin?

Abstract: The Klagenfurt Basin is an E-W-trending narrow Sarmatian to Quaternary flexural basin formed by flexure of the Austro-Alpine lithosphere by loading through the southerly adjacent Karawanken Mountains in the Eastern Alps (Austria). The tectonic evolution of the basin is kinematically connected to Miocene brittle transpressive dextral strike-slip deformation along the Periadriatic Fault which separates the South Alpine unit from the Austro-Alpine unit in the Eastern Alps. The final NW-directed overthrust of the … Show more

“…A typical example of a glacial basin in the eastward oriented drainage is the Enns Valley (Schmid et al 2005). In contrast, the depth to bedrock in the area of the former Drau Glacier, just in front of the emerging Karawanken Mountains, is only in the range of 100 m according to drillholes (Nemes et al 1997;Spendlingwimmer and Heiss 1998) (Fig. 2).…”

“…Subordinately, there are also NE-SW directed, left-lateral strike-slip faults, and accommodating rotation of blocks between main faults. Recent morphology of Karavanke is a consequence of the on-going tectonic movements evidenced by the current seimic activities (Jamšek ruPnik, 2013), active tectonics (PolinSki & eiSBacHer, 1991;nemeS et al, 1997;Jamšek ruPnik, 2013;miHevc et al, 2013) and accurate GPS measurements (vraBec et al, 2006).…”

“…This pertains particularly to a pronounced strength reduction from the external part of an orogen towards its internal parts. As a result, flexural foreland basins develop on the strong lithosphere of external zones of orogens, whereas on low strength lithosphere of their internal zones pullapart basins can develop (Nemes et al, 1997Roure, 2008). The effects of lateral flexural strength variations of the lithosphere of foreland basins were explored by a modelling study that was carried out along a transect through the NE Pyrenees that is well constrained by crustal-scale seismic control and an extensive field-derived database (Verges et al, 1995).…”
