The kinematic viscosity of biodiesel and its blends with diesel fuel

Abstract: As the use of biodiesel becomes more widespread, engine manufacturers have expressed concern about biodiesel's higher viscosity. In particular, they are concerned that biodiesel may exhibit different viscosity-temperature characteristics that could result in higher fuel injection pressures at low engine operating temperatures. This study presents data for the kinematic viscosity of biodiesel and its blends with No. 1 and No. 2 diesel fuels at 75, 50, and 20% biodiesel, from close to their melting point to 100°… Show more

“…This ratio increases especially when the temperature is below 25 o C [11]. Blending of the biodiesel with diesel and preheating of the biodiesel improves the viscous characteristics significantly [5,12,13]. The viscosity of biodiesel can be estimated from well known mixing laws such as the Grun-Nissan and Katti-Chaudhri laws, which were originally proposed by Arrhenis [14].…”

“…Equation (14) is the basic charctersitic equation for filtration. By assuming constant pressure difference ( ∆P), equation (15) can be modified to equation (16). Further, Γ , v and A are assumed constants and taking the fuel filter specific properties described in Table 2, equation (17) was developed.…”

“…Viscosity is an important factor that affects the atomization process of the fuel in the combustion [4]. High viscosity was reported to reduce the fuel flow rate, which makes the engine starve for fuel under certain operating conditions, especially at low temperatures [5]. Transesterification is the most common method used to reduce oil viscosity.…”
