Accurately identifying the location of loss zone after lost circulation is the key to subsequent plugging operation. In view of the difficulty of identifying the location of lost circulation zone, a method of identifying the location of loss zone by transient pressure wave signal is proposed. When lost circulation occurs, transient back pressure is applied to the wellhead at the surface choke manifold to produce transient pressure wave. The transient pressure wave propagates downward from the wellhead. The propagation process of transient pressure wave in an annulus system is analyzed, and the position of loss zone is determined according to the change of pressure signal at the choke manifold. Based on the simulation of this method, relevant experiments are also carried out. Aiming at the problem of excessive noise of the pressure wave signal collected in the experiment, variational modal decomposition (VMD) is used to decompose the signal into multiple band-limited intrinsic mode function (BIMF) components. Combined with a Hilbert spectrum, the time–frequency characteristics and energy distribution of each BIMF component are analyzed in turn. The main frequency component is selected to reconstruct the signal to achieve the denoising effect. On this basis, a wavelet modulus maxima method is used to decompose the denoised signal, extract the characteristic points of the signal, identify the loss circulation information in the signal, and then identify the thief zone position by a time–domain method. Through experimental verification, the existence of loss zone will affect the change trend of pressure wave; a VMD–wavelet modulus maxima algorithm can effectively remove the noise of the pressure wave signal and locate the pressure change point. The experimental recognition error range of this method is 0.10–9.22%, which has certain guiding significance for field application.

Lost circulation is a complicated problem to be banned or combatted during the drilling operations. Mud losses remedies are extensively used to stop or mitigate losses using remedial methods or to prevent mud losses using proactive measures. Lost circulation presents a lot of big challenges during drilling. To address these problems, a number of methods/techniques have evolved over the years. The Rumaila field in Iraq is one of the largest oilfields in the world. Wells drilled in this field are highly susceptible to lost circulation problems when drilling through the Hartha formation. Lost circulation events range from seepage losses to complete loss of the borehole and are a critical issue in field development. This paper describes a study of the lost circulation events for more than 300 wells drilled in the Rumaila field. Lost circulation events were extracted from daily drilling reports, final drilling reports, and technical reports. Key drilling parameters (e.g. ROP, SPM, RPM, WOB, bit type) and mud properties (e.g. mud weight, yield point, gel strength) at the time of each event were recorded along with the lost circulation remedies attempted, and the outcome of those remedies. These data have been analyzed to determine the best ranges of the key drilling parameters that have the greatest chance of mitigating lost circulation in the Hartha formation. Practical field information from the Rumaila field and range of sources have been reviewed and summarized to develop an integrated methodology and flowchart for handling lost circulation events in this formation. In a related development, this paper will be extended work along with previous comprehensive statistical study and sensitivity analysis models about the Hartha formation to obtain the best field procedures for avoiding or minimizing lost circulation events in the Hartha formation. Proactive approaches have been made prior entering the Hartha formation to prevent or mitigate the occurrence of lost circulation. A unique statistical work, primitive mechanisms, typical drilling fluid properties and recommended operational drilling parameters have been evaluated to use during drilling the Hartha formation. In addition, corrective actions have been determined for each kind of the mud losses to provide effective remedies, minimize non-productive time, and reduce cost. Lost circulation strategy to the Hartha formation has been summarized depending on statistical work and economic analysis evaluation to determine the most successful remedies for each type of the losses. These treatments are classified by relying on the mud losses classifications in order to avoid unwanted consequences due to inappropriate actions. This study provides a typical compilation of information regarding traditional approaches and the latest approaches to lost circulation control. In addition, the work attempts to provide useful guidelines or references for both situations in terms preventive measures, remedial methods, and analytical economic study.

Lost circulation, the loss of drilling fluid into holes or fractures throughout the geological formations being drilled, is the most expensive problem encountered in drilling operations for oil and gas wells. It is known that when there is a loss of circulation during the drilling process, the operation activities are delayed or stopped for curing or treatment, resulting in extra time known as non-productive time (NPT). The NPT issues during the drilling operations are the most important priorities for planning any drilling program. Therefore, the lost circulation is one of the main problems which can control the NPT. To mitigate the lost circulation problems, an integrated investigation is necessarily needed for the main parameters which enhance/downgrade the rate of lost circulation. Drilling through the Dammam and Hartha formation is typically accompanied with substantial nonproductive time due to severe and often entire drilling fluid losses. The majority of the curing this problem require time for preparation, placement or setting. In this research, a field study was carried out to investigate the effect of 6 drilling parameters on the rate of the lost circulation. The investigated parameters are the rate of penetration, weight on bit, stand pipe pressure, mud weight, flow rate, and the equivalent circulation density. Furthermore, the effect of lithology type on the lost circulation rate was clearly determined and correlated. In addition, a graphical representation of bit depth vs the real drilling time/date was constructed to compare the lossy wells vs non-lossy wells named frithogram. This study was based on field data for 350 wells drilled in Rumaila Oilfield, southern Iraq. The results of this study showed that if these six operating parameters are standard and controlled, the significance of lost circulation problems could be reduced. However, the main factors which are responsible for the lost circulation problems are lithology types, facies and/or diagenesis process, which mainly distinguish the carbonate formations.
