The kebab technique uses a bipolar pencil to retrieve a dropped nucleus of the lens via a small incision

Abstract: We developed a new method to retrieve a dropped nucleus of the lens via a small incision using bipolar pencils, the kebab technique, to solve the lack of small-gauge fragmatomes, and the expense and toxicity of perfluorocarbon liquids (PFCL). A total of 8 eyes in 6 patients underwent this technique and were reviewed. After vitrectomy, the dropped nucleus of the lens was lifted from the retina by adhesion with a bipolar pencil, and phacoemulsification was performed while rotating the lens. The outcome measures … Show more

“…In kebab technique described by Aso et al, PFCL use was interpreted as a cause of extra cost. [3] We agree this interpretation in a cost-effective way of perspective but we still advocate a barrier between the lens material and retina is beneficial, as hydroxypropyl methylcellulose in our cases. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose is cheaper than both PFCL and retina as in ophthalmic viscosurgical device versus vitreous.…”

“…Since microincision vitrectomy became preferred method over classical larger incision surgeries; alternative techniques to manage the dropped nucleus without using fragmatome are sought and reported. [2,3] It is essential to perform a complete vitrectomy with maximum effort to clean vitreous base where unnoticed small breaks or holes may cause consecutive retinal detachments.…”

“…After operation, a nephrostomy tube is usually retained for 7 days to drain urine and prevent allantoic cyst and urinary extravasation. And it was used for compression to stop bleeding or as a surgical passage for re-PCNL [ 16 ]. However, during the period of nephrostomy, most patients will have lumbar pain and urine extravasation, which will not only lead to inconvenient life, but bring about prolonged hospitalization [ 17 ].…”

“…A bipolar pencil is also used to retrieve a DN and bring it more anteriorly for easier phacoemulsification. 9 A thorough vitrectomy should be performed first not to aspirate any vitreous fibrils during these procedures.…”
