The KASCADE-Grande experiment

Abstract: a b s t r a c t KASCADE-Grande is the enlargement of the KASCADE extensive air shower detector, realized to expand the cosmic ray studies from the previous 10 14 -10 17 eV primary energy range to 10 18 eV. This is performed by extending the area covered by the KASCADE electromagnetic array from 200 Â 200 to 700 Â 700 m 2 by means of 37 scintillator detector stations of 10 m 2 area each. This new array is namedGrande and provides measurements of the all-charged particle component of extensive air showers (N ch … Show more

“…The relevant components of the KASCADE-Grande (Apel et al, 2010) multi-detector experiment used for the present analysis are the Grande and KASCADE arrays. Grande is formed by 37 stations of 10 m 2 scintillation detectors each, spread over an irregular grid with an average spacing of $137 m, covering an area of about 700 Â 700 m 2 (see Fig.…”

“…Also in this case the total number of muons N l in the shower disk is derived from a maximum likelihood estimation where the lateral distribution function is based on the one proposed by Lagutin and Raikin (2001). The reconstruction procedures and accuracies of KASCADE-Grande observables are described in detail in Apel et al (2010) and related references therein.…”

“…1. KASCADE-Grande [10] provides an area of 0.5 km 2 and operates jointly with the existing KASCADE detectors. The joint measurements with the KASCADE muon tracking devices are ensured by an additional cluster (Piccolo) located close to the center of KASCADE-Grande and deployed for fast trigger purposes.…”

“…In parallel to the N µ − N ch energy and mass estimation procedure used in the KASCADEGrande Experiment [1], the study of the lateral density of charged secondary particles from an EAS can provide sufficient information in order to be used in the development of an alternative reconstruction method. From the analysis of CORSIKA [2] EAS simulations based on the QGSJet-II.02 hadronic interaction model, the charged particle densities at 500 m (S(500) parameter [3]) and 200 m (S(200) parameter [4,5]) from the shower core, were proven to be good candidates for energy estimation and mass discrimination.…”
