A Review of Interferometric Synthetic Aperture RADAR (InSAR) Multi-Track Approaches for the Retrieval of Earth’s Surface Displacements

Synthetic Aperture RADAR Interferometry (InSAR) provides a unique tool for the quantitative measurement of the Earth's surface deformations induced by a variety of natural (such as volcanic eruptions, landslides and earthquakes) and anthropogenic (e.g., ground-water extraction in highly-urbanized areas, deterioration of buildings and public facilities) processes. In this framework, use of InSAR technology makes it possible the long-term monitoring of surface deformations and the analysis of relevant geodynamic phenomena. This review paper provides readers with a general overview of the InSAR principles and the recent development of the advanced multi-track InSAR combination methodologies, which allow to discriminate the 3-D components of deformation processes and to follow their temporal evolution. The increasing availability of SAR data collected by complementary illumination angles and from different RADAR instruments, which operate in various bands of the microwave spectrum (X-, L-and C-band), makes the use of multi-track/multi-satellite InSAR techniques very promising for the characterization of deformation patterns. A few case studies will be presented, with a particular focus on the recently proposed multi-track InSAR method known as the Minimum Acceleration (MinA) combination approach. The presented results evidence the validity and the relevance of the investigated InSAR approaches for geospatial analyses.

Shenzhen, a coastal city, has changed from a small village to a supercity since the late 1980s. With the rapid development of its population and economy, ground disasters also occur frequently. These disasters bring great harm to human life and surface architecture. However, there is a lack of regular ground measurement data in this area. Permanent scatterer interferometry (PSI) technology can detect millimeter deformation of urban surface. In this paper, the building height and deformation from 2008 to 2010 in the Futian District of Shenzhen are obtained by using this technique alongside high-resolution TerraSAR-X data. For a visual expression of the result, we export the permanent scatterer (PS) points on buildings to Google Earth for 3D visualization after ortho-rectification of the PS height. Based on the Google Earth 3D model, the temporal and spatial characteristics of the building deformation became obvious. The InSAR measurements show that during the study period, the deformation rates of the Futian area are between –10 and 10 mm/year, and deformation is mainly distributed in a few buildings. These unstable activities can be attributed to human activities and the natural climate, which provides a reference for the local government to carry out a survey of surface deformation, as well as the monitoring and management of urban buildings, in the future.

Combined Use of C- and X-Band SAR Data for Subsidence Monitoring in an Urban Area

Abstract:In this study, we present the detection and characterization of ground displacements in the urban area of Pisa (Central Italy) using Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) products. Thirty RADARSAT-2 and twenty-nine COSMO-SkyMed images have been analyzed with the Small BAseline Subset (SBAS) algorithm, in order to quantify the ground subsidence and its temporal evolution in the three-year time interval from 2011 to 2014. A borehole database was reclassified in stratigraphical and geotechnical homogeneous units, providing the geological background needed for the local scale analysis of the recorded displacements. Moreover, the interferometric outputs were compared with the last 30 years' urban evolution of selected parts of the city. Two deformation patterns were recorded by the InSAR data: very slow vertical movements within the defined stability threshold (±2.5 mm/yr) and areas with subsidence rates down to −5 to −7 mm/yr, associated with high peak velocities (−15 to −20 mm/yr) registered by single buildings or small groups of buildings. Some of these structures are used to demonstrate that the high subsidence rates are related to the recent urbanization, which is the trigger for the accelerated consolidation process of highly compressible layers. Finally, this urban area was a valuable test site for demonstrating the different results of the C-and X-band data processing, in terms of the density of points and the quality of the time series of deformation.
