The Itel-MMSE: an Italian telephone version of the Mini-Mental State Examination

Abstract: Method We compared performance in an Italian telephone version of the Mini‐Mental Status Examination (Itel‐MMSE) with performance in the standard MMSE administered face to face to 104 inpatients affected by cognitive deficit. Results Their cognitive ability varied from mildly to severely impaired. Total scores of the two MMSE versions correlated strongly for all patients (r=0.85) and for very mildly (r=0.77), mildly (r=0.79), and moderately (r=0.72) demented. A weak but statistically significant correlation wa… Show more

“…mRS is largely determined by motor performance, hence the need for the presence of motor symptoms and signs at enrolment. Prespecified secondary outcomes at day 90 included activities of daily living (Barthel index); 31 cognition (modified telephone mini-mental state examination 32 and telephone interview for cognition scale 33 ); health-related quality of life (European quality of life-5 dimensions, EQ-5D, 34 from which health utility status was calculated [EQ-5D-HUS]); and mood (short Zung depression score 35 ). 36 At discharge from initial admittance to hospital, investigators recorded duration of stay, and discharge destination (to institution or home).…”

“…(2) Cognitive status was assessed through a phone version of the Mini Mental State Examination (Itel-MMSE) ( 35 ). Itel-MMSE is a validated Italian tool which shows strong correlations with paper-and-pencil MMSE ( r = 0.85 in the whole sample and r = 0.77 in MCI subjects) ( 36 ) and it is predictive of domain-specific cognitive test performances ( 37 ).…”

“…Inclusion criteria included: (i) age > 18 years, (ii) mini mental state examination (MMSE) score > 26 (in person (Folstein et al, 1975) or telephone version (Metitieri et al, 2001)) or a score equal to 0 at the Clinical Dementia Rating Scale (CDR), (iii) availability of 3D T1-weighted MR images with no artifacts affecting atrophy assessment with MTA and PA scales. As exclusion criteria, we considered: developmental cognitive disorders, learning disabilities, diagnosis of a psychiatric disease and evidence of any major neurological disease (brain mass, white matter hyperintensities in patients undergoing MRI for suspected multiple sclerosis or suspected ischemic lesions, aneurysm larger than 10 mm, arteriovenous malformation besides developmental venous anomalies, congenital malformations of the central nervous system) after radiological assessment.…”
