THE ISOLATION OF A FIELD STRAIN OF HAEMONCHUS CONTORTUS IN QUEENSLAND SHOWING MULTIPLE ANTHELMINTIC RESISTANCE

Abstract: Following the apparent failure of levamisole to control infections of Haemonchus contortus in sheep at Lawes in south eastern Queensland, a strain of this parasite was isolated at the Animal Research Institute, Yeerongpilly. This strain was used to infect sheep at Yeerongpilly and the Merrindale Research Station, Victoria where four experiments to classify the resistance pattern of the parasite were carried out. Resistance to thiabendazole was first suspected in 1969, and these experiments confirmed that resis… Show more

“…Resistance has been recorded also in drugs with a narrower spectrum of activity such as the salicylanilides (Jeannin et al, 1990;Scott and Armour, 1991). The major anthelmintic drugs against which AR has been reported include: phenothiazine (Drudge et al, 1957), thiabendazole (TBZ) and other BZs (Drudge et al, 1964;Green et al, 1981;Waruiru et al, 1998;Zajac and Gipson, 2000), ivermectin (IVM) (van Wyk and Malan, 1988;Echevarria and Trindale, 1989;van Wyk et al, 1989) and levamisole (LEV) (Gillham and Obendorf, 1985). It is alarming that GINs of small ruminants have developed resistance against all major groups of anthelmintics which compel to think about alternatives to use of chemicals against GINs.…”

“…Nitroxynil is also active against some nematodes, particularly Haemonchus contortus (Lucas 1971). Moreover, it has been shown to be effective against isolates of H. contortus that are resistant to other groups of drugs (Green et al 1981;Jeannin et al 1990). In this connection, it may have a role in the treatment of drug-resistant fluke as it is active against triclabendazole-resistant Fasciola hepatica (Coles and Stafford 2001).…”

“…As a consequence, multiple resistance (i.e. resistance against more than one anthelmintic family) has appeared in field strains [44]. The same species can be prone to develop anthelmintic resistance in a particular host and not in another one, for instance in goats versus sheep [10] or in sheep versus cattle [26].…”
