The iron calorimeter and muon identifier for SLD

Abstract: The iron flux-return structure for the SLC Large Detector (SLD) has' been instrumented with plastic streamer tubes covering an area of about 4500 square meters, to provide muon identification plus energy measurement of hadron showers. A description is given of the production techniques used to construct this large detector system, with an emphasis on the methods by which high reliability and a small number of defects in the completed assembly were ensured.

“…This tag will be discussed in chapter 7. [20] for electron identification and thrust axis determination, and an instrumented flux return/muon detector, the warm iron calorimeter [21]. The tracking chambers will be described below, and details about the other individual detector components may be found in the references given above.…”

“…0 A warm iron calorimeter provides position and energy measurements of particles escaping the liquid argon calorimeter [24] In the analyses of this thesis, only the tracking systems and liquid argon calorimeter are used. These devices and their role in the analyses are described in this section.…”

“…The improved acceptance of VXD3 allows highly efficient track finding up to jcosuj 0.9 [9]. The new trigger for m 1 m 2 events covers the angular range up to jcosuj , 0.95 by requiring two back-to-back tracks that pass through the interaction point and reach the end cap Warm Iron Calorimeter [10].…”
