The iPAC Scale: A Survey to Measure Distinctive Mobile Pedagogies

Abstract: This paper develops and examines a scale to capture teachers' views of the mobile pedagogies they are adopting. Mobile pedagogies refer to the practices and approaches teachers use that involve mobile technologies to support learning. A mobile technology is any portable, handheld technology that potentially supports learning and includes laptops, tablets and smartphones. This study develops a rigorous scale to capture mobile pedagogies adopted in mobile learning tasks designed by teachers. In particular, the s… Show more

“…The results of the Australian scientists' research: Kearney M., Burke P. F. and Schuck S. have provided a model that has emerged from the analysis with respect to each of the primary and secondary dimensions of pedagogical practice of mobile learning applications. This research confirms the relevance of the application of mobile technologies in the development of students' information competence [9]. It should be noted that the process of implementing mobile learning must be consistent with the current stage of development of the economy and society as a whole.…”

“…Central to research discussed in this article, is the iPAC mobile pedagogical framework (Burden & Kearney, 2018;Kearney et al, 2012;Kearney et al, 2019;Kearney, Burden, Schuck, Burke, & Aubusson, 2020), which was developed to capture signature pedagogies adopted when using mobile technologies for teaching. The framework is underpinned by socio-cultural theory.…”

“…A mobile learning approach -one that makes use of mobile devices -is an area ripe for application and research in the context of remote learning (Ismail et al, 2013;Kearney et al, 2019). Mobile devices provide a rich set of communication, documentation, and learning functionality through cameras, microphones and apps, and when incorporated creatively can provide students with authentic learning experiences, and an enhanced sense of agency.…”

“…"A mobile pedagogy is a pedagogy which employs the characteristics and affordances of mobile devices to enhance learning" (Burden et al, 2019, p.159). Table 1 shows a framework designed to describe mobile learning from a pedagogical perspective (cited in Kearney et al, 2019). In an extensive systematic literature review, and then through a best/worst survey, researchers have identified a set of 21 pedagogical principles underpinning mobile learning activities.…”
