The Investigation on Mineral Wool Performance as a Potential Filter to Remove TSS in Cikapayang River, East Jawa, Indonesia

Abstract: Mineral wool has been used as a filter medium that reaches approximately 95% removal efficiency of total suspended solids (TSS) on a laboratory scale. However, there is no research available has been applied on a larger scale. Hence, this study investigated the ability of mineral wool to remove TSS in two separate segments of the Cikapayang River at different seasons. This analysis utilizes a mineral wool type I, with a dimension of 180×30×120 cm placed in segment 2, and a mineral wool type II with a dimension… Show more

“…In the dry season the average is 77 mg/L with a minimum value of 10 mg/L and a maximum value of 179 mg/L. These differences are caused by the dilution from rainwater Prayogo et al (2023). Therefore, the average measured COD value is smaller than in the dry season for each measured sample volume.…”

“…On a laboratory scale, mineral wools could remove TSS, total nitrogen, total phosphate, and COD by 85%, 87%, 71% and 79%, respectively, in preliminary tests using a PFR reactor (Aphirta et al, 2020). In turn, on a field scale located in Cikapayang River, mineral wool could remove pollutants with COD removal percentage of 38-50%, TSS of 30-33%, total phosphate of 23-28%, and total nitrogen of 39-49% (Prayogo et al, 2023). COD removal modeling is carried out to determine the dimensions of the mineral wool that must be installed on the river body with a certain pollutant load level.…”

“…Every time it rains, Taduan Street in Medan Tembung, Medan City, frequently floods. Every year, because of the accumulation of household garbage in the drainage channels, floods of up to 20 to 80 cm occur (Prayogo et al, 2023). Eventually, the waterway was unable to dispose of runoff water effectively.…”
