The Invasive Mosquitoes of Canada: An Entomological, Medical, and Veterinary Review

Abstract: Several invasive mosquitoes have become established in Canada, including important pathogen vectors such as Aedes albopictus, Ae. japonicus, and Culex pipiens. Some species have been present for decades, while others are recent arrivals. Several species present new health concerns and may result in autochthonous seasonal outbreaks of pathogens, particularly in southern Canada, that were previously restricted to imported cases. This review provides an overview of current knowledge of the biological, medical, an… Show more

“…Kaufman and Fonseca (2014) stated that in the 15 years since its introduction to North America, Ae. japonicus has been found in nearly all states in the eastern half of the United States and the Canadian provinces of Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia (Peach 2018), Newfoundland, New Brunswick, and Nove Scotia (Peach and Matthews 2022), but can also be found in Washington, Oregon, and Hawaii (Seok et al 2023). The success of this species' establishment in the northern hemisphere can be attributed to its cold tolerance and ability to successfully survive in diverse larval habitats, with these traits overlapping with Ae.…”

“…It has been suggested that Aedes koreicus could potentially invade North America, as Ae. japonicus did (Kaufman and Fonseca 2014, Peach and Matthews 2022). Aedes japonicus has spread to Europe and North America since the 1990s.…”

“…albopictus were finally detected in Texas in 1985 and spread rapidly both north and south (Pratt et al 1946;Sprenger & Wuithiranyagool 1986;Gratz 2004). Current studies indicate that this spread has reached Canada and more than half the countries in South America (including Argentina in the southern end of the continent), and this increase in range is expected to continue (Peach & Matthews 2022;Kamal et al 2022;Giordano et al 2020;Garcia-Rejon et al 2021).…”

“…To the best of our knowledge, this is the rst synthesis of knowledge that explores the literature on mosquitoes through the lens of Planetary Health within a Canadian context. Other studies have reviewed the literature on various factors and their in uence on mosquitoes in Canada, but did not take a holistically focused approach (Wudel, et al, 2016;Hongoh, et al, 2009;Kulkarni, et al, 2015;Peach, et al, 2022). Non-English papers were also not considered, leading to several articles in French being omitted, potentially leaving out some relevant works.…”
