The invasive Ameiurus nebulosus (Lesueur, 1819) as a permanent part of the fish fauna in selected reservoirs in Central Europe: long-term study of three shallow lakes

Abstract: The invasive brown bullhead (Ameiurus nebulosus (Lesueur, 1918)) has been present in Europe since the late 19th century, but there is still a lack of reliable information about its distribution in Europe and the condition of its population. A long-term study (from 2000 to 2011) in three shallow lakes in Central Europe (eastern Poland) was carried out to determine the occurrence of the brown bullhead and its participation in the fish community. The brown bullhead was present in almost all the sampling fishing i… Show more

“…The brown bullhead is an alien and invasive species that should be removed from natural aquatic ecosystems. It is an omnivorous species [36], very resistant to many environmental factors and having stable populations in many water reservoirs in the region [37]. The knowledge on the immune resistance and redox stress of selected fish species is very modest and there is no such information in the available references.…”

“…The brown bullhead catfish Ameirus nebulosus Lesueur, 1819 (Ictaluridae) is native to Canada and the USA ( Schindler, 1957 ). It was first introduced into Europe as an ornamental pond species in Poland in 1885 ( Nowak et al ., 2008 ) and is now common in most European countries ( Rutkayová et al ., 2013 ; Rechulicz & Płaska, 2018 ). The species generally inhabits backwaters and pools of large lowland rivers, nutrient-rich lakes and ponds, reservoirs and irrigation canals ( Page & Burr, 1991 ; Ulikowski et al ., 2022 ).…”

“…Despite its present wide European distribution ( Rutkayová et al ., 2013 ; Rechulicz & Plaska, 2018 ), knowledge of brown bullhead parasites and pathogens remains relatively scarce. In 2012, a mass mortality event was reported for a Hungarian brown bullhead population, the deaths being linked to an outbreak of European sheatfish ranavirus ( Fehér et al ., 2016 ).…”
