The intertidal gastropods (Gastropoda: Mollusca) diversity and taxa distribution in Alas Purwo National Park, East Java, Indonesia

Abstract: Abstract. Susintowati, Puniawati N, Poedjirahajoe, Handayani NSN, Hadisusanto S. 2019. The intertidal gastropods (Gastropoda: Mollusca) diversity and taxa distribution in Alas Purwo National Park, East Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 2016-2027. Gastropods play an essential role in the ecosystem and can be used as bioindicators of environmental pollution. Understanding of their behavior, habitat, and distribution, and how these factors evolve, is crucial. This paper aimed to describe the diversity of the gas… Show more

“…The study on the coastal area of Liki Islarmi collected 1812 gastropods, with a range of 182-603 individual gastropods within 6 sampling stations, consisting of 63 species of gastropods from 23 families (Table 2). This species' number and distribution showed that gastropods have a very wide distribution area and are often found in intertidal areas (Saleky et al 2019;Susintowati et al 2019). The community structure of gastropods was strongly influenced by changes in environmental factors (Hitalessy et al 2015;Septiani and Wiharyanto 2015;D'Souza et al 2022).…”

“…Different coastal ecosystems, such as ecosystems of seagrass, mangroves, and coral reefs, have major functions as places to live, for foraging, spawning, sheltering, and many activities of countless marine biota, including gastropods (Gres et al 2019;Nopiansyah et al 2021;Hilmi et al 2022). Gastropods are animals with very high adaptability and are capable of surviving in various places (Nontji 2002;Susintowati et al 2019).…”

“…The Pielous species evenness index (H'/Hmax) was highest at station 3 (0.6) followed by station 4 (0.58) and the lowest was recorded in station 2 (0.38). Susintowati et al (2019) who estimated the gastropod diversity and taxa distribution in Alas Purwo National Park, East Java, Indonesia reported the highest value of H' of 3.271, in a rocky shore and this means that, of all the sampled sites, the rocky beach has the highest gastropod diversity when compared to mangrove area where H' = 1.499. Shannon-Weiner diversity index in the range of 1.14 to 1.55 in the present study has an equivalent diversity as a community containing equally-common species of exp(H') which only in the range of 3-5.…”

“…Several factors, including the location of the different collection points and the distinct characteristics of gastropods, suspect this case. The Olividae family lives in the deep sea [12] and is usually active at night and high tide [13], but the study was conducted from morning to evening, and the sea water was receding therefore. Based on the results of research in the mangrove ecosystem of Nusa Lembongan, the gastropods found were dominated by the families Cerithiidae, Potamididae, and Littorinidae.…”
