PurposeThis research aims to investigate the role of digitalization in facilitating the integration of circular economy (CE) principles within a firm operating in the Italian agrifood sector. The study seeks to explore the evidence and effects emerging from the adoption of digital technologies in a small and medium enterprise (SME) operational setting.Design/methodology/approachAn interpretative case study was conducted on an SME operating in the Italian agrifood sector. The selected firm is known to adopt a business model oriented towards circularity by using entirely digitized closed-loop hydroponic cultivation.FindingsThe findings reveal that the digitalization of the production process, supported by an integrated information system, enables optimizing the use and consumption of natural resources and minimizes waste during the production stage. Additionally, the authors observed that digitalization triggers a complex mechanism of interaction between various firm factors, market dynamics and forms of institutionalization, which are intrinsically intertwined with the concepts of sustainability and resilience in the agrifood sector.Originality/valueFrom a theoretical point of view, the interpretive reading key – historically appropriate to embrace the complexity of the phenomena under study – can foster a deeper understanding of the dynamics underlying digitalization as an enabling factor to facilitating the adoption of CE principles in the agrifood sector. Regarding managerial implications, the study contributes to the debate on the importance of digital transition in the agrifood industry, which in the Italian context shows considerable resistance due, especially, to the size of the firms (mainly SMEs and micro) and managerial conservatism tradition.

PurposeThe current study aimed to identify the impact of the dynamic capabilities on the circular economy in Jordan's small- and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises sector as and the mediating role of industrial Internet of things.Design/methodology/approachThis study surveyed small and medium manufacturing enterprises operating in Jordan and collected 459 responses through an online self-administered questionnaire. The effects of dynamic capabilities and the industrial Internet of things on the circular economy were analyzed using covariance-based structural equation modeling (CB-SEM).FindingsEmpirical results showed that all hypotheses are accepted. The results also revealed that the relationship between dynamic capabilities (sensing, seizing and reconfiguring) on a circular economy is mediated by the industrial Internet of things.Originality/valueThis work expanded the application of the dynamic capabilities view to investigate the antecedent effects of the industrial Internet of things and the circular economy and deepened understanding of the dynamic capabilities view theory in assessing the dynamic activities of these firms based on the three dimensions of sensing, seizing and reconfiguring. In general, this study made a theoretical and managerial contribution to supply chain and circular economy literature.

PurposeThis research aims to comprehensively analyse the Agri-food supply chain, by identifying the barriers, and considering effective pathways towards a green supply chain. To the best of our knowledge, in the research area of supply chain, the majority of the research is oriented towards the evaluation of barriers and pathways or drivers to the implementation of green supply chain management in the manufacturing industry. The field of Agri-food is among the sectors of concern due to the quantum and basic necessity of the industry.Design/methodology/approachThe contribution of this paper is to develop and evaluate a general framework of the most relevant barriers and possible pathways towards the green Agri-food supply chain, with the help of a hybrid approach combining both the ANP and ELECTRE I methods, via a case study of the fish canning industry.FindingsFurthermore, the study findings will help both academicians and practitioners in developing and evaluating green supply chain frameworks in this area of study.Originality/valueThe results of this study show that the cost of greening the supply in terms of implementing sustainability standard, or advanced technology are the most relevant barriers, and that the social and operational pathways family is among the best effectives pathways.
