“…In fact, question asking has been shown in the past to be part of the creative problem-solving process in children (Torrance, 1970). One of the tasks historically used to assess question asking was the unusual questions task (UQT), based on Burkhart’s (1961) divergent questions task, the UQT was part of the original version of the classic creativity assessment battery, the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking (TTCT; Torrance, 1966). The TTCT is one of the most widely used and studied measures of creative idea generation (Grajzel et al, 2022).…”

“…The Unusual Uses task (Task 5) instructs participants to generate interesting and unusual ways to use an item, such as cardboard boxes in Form A and tin cans in Form B. Torrance picked these specific objects as both exhibit similar physical characteristics considering that both can be used as containers at a fundamental, noncreative level (Torrance, 1974). The Unusual Questions task (Task 6) is based on Burkhart's (1961) Unusual Questions Test measuring what he called “divergent power.” This task prompts participants to generate questions about the item (cardboard boxes and tin cans) introduced in the previous task (Task 5). The last item, the Just Suppose task solicits participants to make a list of what would happen if “Clouds had strings attached to them which hang down to earth” and on Form A, and “A great fog were to fall over the earth, and all we could see of people would be their feet.” on Form B.…”

“…Addressing himself to this issue, Burkhart (1961) conducted a factor-analytic study of the relationship of the performance of college students in art and in student teaching. For example, should the type of creativity that the artist displays be considered a specific trait limited to the visual arts or is his creativity a manifestation of a general characteristic that permeates many facets of his life?…”
