The interplay between task difficulty and microsaccade rate: Evidence for the critical role of visual load

Abstract: In previous research, microsaccades have been suggested as psychophysiological indicators of task load. So far, it is still under debate how different types of task demands are influencing microsaccade rate. This piece of research examines the relation between visual load, mental load and microsaccade rate. Fourteen participants carried out a continuous performance task (n-back), in which visual (letters vs. abstract figures) and mental task load (1-back to 4-back) were manipulated as within-subjects variables… Show more

“…However, looking or gazing at a stimulus or object does not necessarily indicate that attention is paid towards that said stimulus or object (i.e., "inattentional blindness" (e.g., Hubal, Mitroff, & Cain, 2010)). The detection of visual attention is remains under research (Krueger et al, 2019;Schneider et al, 2020).…”

“…However, it should be kept in mind that even during fixations the eyes undergo small saccades, called microsaccades which are necessary for perceptual processing (Martinez-Conde et al, 2020) and are correlated with various cognitive processes (e.g. Krejtz et al, 2020;Krueger et al, 2019;Schneider et al, 2021). The fixation happens when the brain is processing information (Groner & Groner, 1982).…”

“…However, since-as sketched above-art literature so often discusses the movement of the eyes, saccades are a prominent topic for art related eye tracking studies. An interesting class of saccades are very small saccades, called microsaccades which are related to various processes of perception and cognition (Martinez-Conde, Engbert, & Groner, 2020) and distinguish looking from seeing (Krueger et al, 2019;Schneider et al, 2021).…”
