The interplay between media-for-monitoring and media-for-searching: How news media trigger searches and edits in Wikipedia

Abstract: This study investigates how traditional news media and Internet services have become entangled in recipients’ habits of gathering information on current topics. Push media enable citizens to scan the issue environment while pull media enable them to seek out in-depth information if information needs have been elicited. Furthermore, content quality in many pull media may increase when more users generate content, removing flaws and adding information. We expected that TV and newspaper coverage of an issue will … Show more

“…While previous studies have focused on newspaper coverage of epidemics 31 , we investigated the relationship between the exposure to TV coverage and online news, and the attention to Wikipedia pages. Our study confirms the high sensitivity of Wikipedia searches to breaking news and official announcements, in particular in the case of disaster events, as found by previous studies 32,33 . On the other hand, the temporal dynamics of Wikipedia page views during the 2016 ZIKV epidemic showed a nonlinear dependence with media coverage: the Wikipedia pages activity was high in the initial phases of the outbreak, but it declined more quickly than media coverage.…”

“…On the other hand, the temporal dynamics of Wikipedia page views during the 2016 ZIKV epidemic showed a nonlinear dependence with media coverage: the Wikipedia pages activity was high in the initial phases of the outbreak, but it declined more quickly than media coverage. This can be explained by the fact that information on Wikipedia is rather static, and users will view Wikipedia pages immediately after the news breaks but they will not return in the next days, unless more recent events renew their attention 32 .…”

“…Instantaneous changes give no clue as to whether media coverage shapes the public agenda or the other way around; this pattern of instantaneous causality was frequent despite the high temporal resolution of the data. It seems that reactions of the public (media) to changes in the media (public) salience often happen within one day's time (Geiß et al, 2016).…”

“…In the extant literature, only Rodgers et al [ 38 ] have assessed the usage of media sources as variables for the statistical analysis to predict public health behaviors showing that there is predictive value for including media variables as part of the segmentation process. Another study also noted similar increases in page views and edits on Wikipedia articles that were related to certain topics featured on TV or news outlets [ 39 ].…”
