“…Likewise, postdoctoral internships for GAPs are typically informal (Blanton, 2014), and it is difficult for candidates to find licensed supervisors and opportunities that would satisfy licensure requirements. Even HSPs have struggled to find required internship experience, and leaders have needed to come up with creative solutions (Hogg & Olvey, 2007) and multimillion dollar investments (Walton, 2013) to tackle the internship matching challenge. Requiring large numbers of I-O and consulting candidates for licensure to obtain supervision from licensed psychologists would further strain the system for HSPs.…”

“…The internship crisis has been found to impact even the highest achieving students, regardless of whether their area of study was school, counseling, or clinical psychology (Berger, 2011). Although students in clinical and counseling psychology are undoubtedly affected by the internship crisis, school psychology students have been the least successful in obtaining APA-accredited or APPIC internships in recent years, despite having the highest successful match rate from 2005to 2007(APPIC, 2011, 2012a, 2013, 2014aKeilin, personal communication, July 30, 2013). During the 2013-2014 match cycle, 69.5% of school psychology students matched to an APA-accredited or APPIC-member site in either Phase I or II, compared with 80.1% of clinical psychology students and 81.7% of counseling psychology students (APPIC, 2014a).…”

“…The internship crisis affects hundreds of students each year, in addition to having a significant impact on the entire field of psychology. Despite such an imbalance being evident since 1996 (see Petersen, ), recently, a more concerted effort, particularly by the APA, has been made to seriously address this shortage; however, despite such efforts, the imbalance continues to this day (APPIC, ; Walton, ). For example, during the 2013–2014 match cycle, 583 of the 4,335 students who participated in the match were unsuccessful in obtaining an APA‐accredited or APPIC‐member internship during either Phase I or Phase II of the match (APPIC, ).…”
