Water is an essential service for the sustainable development and economic competitiveness of any country. The global water demand has increased substantially due to economic development, climate change, and rising population. The Internet of Things (IoT) and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) can help conserve available water resources. Smart cities apply IoT to boost the performance and efficiency of urban facilities. Smart cities are towns created to use IoT and ICT (innovative technologies) such as smart water applications. Several studies on smart water technology have been conducted, but there is a need to review current research that leverages the IoT as a communication technology to design effective smart water applications. This review paper is aimed at presenting evidence on the current design of smart water applications. The study also covers publication statistics to increase collaboration between stakeholders. Findings show that various technologies such as microcontrollers, embedded programming languages, sensors, communication modules, and protocols are used by researchers to accomplish their aim of designing IoT-based smart water solutions. None of the publications employed the 5G mobile networks as a communication module for their smart water application development. Findings further show that the integration of 3D printing and solar energy into IoT-based smart water applications is revolutionary and can increase the sustainability of the systems. Future directions required to ensure that developed smart water applications are widely adopted to help conserve and manage water resources are suggested.

Water conservation is critical because it is one of the most significant factors for all species' survival. According to the Central Ground Water Board's estimates, underground water will be scarce in 15 Indian states by 2025 [1]. However, as per the report from Ministry of Environment and Forest, only 10 to 20% rainwater is harvested. In urban areas, it is seen that nowadays concrete structures are constructed everywhere, so it is not possible to recharge the water table by natural process of raining. All the rainwater which is one of the sources for fresh water goes to drain. This causes the depletion of groundwater level which may be fatal in the future. Therefore, a rainwater harvesting system is required in Indian household to conserve water. On the other hand, the urban cities are having high pollutant levels which in turn affecting the quality of water. The government has defined certain parameters for quality checking of water. With the aid of the suitable sensors and IoT boards, quality checking, monitoring and water segregation can be easily achieved. In this work, an efficient and cost effective technique of rainwater harvesting has been presented. Some real case studies have been done at Indian houses in order to validate the effectiveness of system in terms of its implementation and cost analysis. As a result, the proposed system becomes one of the smart solutions to address the modern problem of rainwater harvesting with water quality management in low cost.

Rainwater harvesting is one of the oldest practices used to conserve and optimize water resources. Nowadays, there are a lot of public and private facilities which have well-constructed Rainwater Harvesting systems. Still, they usually can't test the quality of the water preserved and has no mechanism to purify the impure content to make them consumable. Many known techniques are primitive and conventional for today's standards. The existing systems don't provide connective features, water treatment or contingency measures to counteract any problem. Usually, these systems are integrated onto blockchains, AI, and some other domains to innovate a new paradigm. Still, the results are generally considered a gimmick and are not helpful for general usage. This lack of compatibility and features with no effective solution needs to be rectified, and a real-world upgrade is required to construct a connected, safe and effortless system is imminent. Therefore, an integrative domain approach is necessary to facilitate the process to tackle these problems, where one of the major domains in technology, such as IoT, is used. The proposed model addresses the issues native to the conventional method and provides a connective environment with water treatment capabilities to establish an effortless and connected Rainwater Harvesting system through IoT with precise results and scopes that help the said challenges.
