the rights to life and health are basic human rights but, as life spans increase and societies age, these rights become increasingly difficult to secure. the number of people needing care, nursing, and medical treatment increases-and their expectations of quality of life rise-faster than the available financial assets and workforce. the article aims at defining the influence of digital literacy of patients and digital-based medical services availability on perspectives of fulfilling health-related needs specific for ageing societies. a variety of information and communication technologies (iCt) solutions can deliver at least temporary relief to countries suffering from these problems, assuming that the potential beneficiaries are able and willing to use such methods. it is thus worthwhile to foster digital literacy, especially among middle-aged and older people. iCt-based solutions include a variety of more or less technologically advanced, sophisticated, and easy-to-use services, many of which have been in operation and common use for decades, and are thus ripe for medical application. Such technologies can create a highly complex system of interconnected electronic tools and information systems operating on sensitive medical data that must remain confidential. these systems aim to increase patients' medical safety and maximize their quality of life, but they also pose serious threats to their privacy. Confidential data are protected by legal regulations, including the recently introduced european General Data protection Regulation (GDpR), but primary care physicians should not be discouraged by this from implementing iCt-based solutions into their practices, as they may significantly lessen their everyday workload.

Background: Women use the Internet more often to access health information than men. Objective: This study aims to analyze the socio-demographic effect on women's access to health information via the Internet in Indonesia. Methods: This study uses data from the 2017 Indonesian Demographic and Health Survey (IDHS). The sample include 19,389 women aged 15-54 years. The independent variables include age, education, working status, ownership index, type and area of residence. The dependent variable is the use of the internet to access health information. Data analysis with Chi-Square and binary logistics using the Stata application version 15.1. Results: Education level, age, wealth index, working status, type and area of residence were found to influence the behavior of Indonesian women in searching for health information through the Internet. Health information is sought more frequently by women who are younger, highly educated than older people and by those who have higher levels of wealth and status as working women. In addition, the search for health information is more often carried out in urban areas than in rural areas, and more in western Indonesia than in eastern Indonesia. Conclusion: Access to health information by Indonesian women on the Internet is influenced by various socio-demographic factors, taking into account sociodemographic characteristics and differences, all women should have equal access to reliable health information

The association between Internet use and health-related outcomes in older adults and the elderly: a cross-sectional study

Background Older adults and elderly persons can experience a significant digital divide. However, there are many studies reporting that the use of the Internet has benefits related to a person’s health status and social inclusion. It is not fully clear if Internet use and health-related outcomes share common antecedents or if using the Internet may have a favourable effect on the determinants responsible for good health. The main aim of this study was to assess the relationship between the use of the Internet and health-related outcomes in older adults and elderly people in Poland. Methods The effect of the use of the Internet was analysed with regression models after adjusting for sociodemographic factors. The data used for the analysis were obtained through a telephone-based survey on a representative sample of Polish adults at least 50 years of age. Results By categorising the frequency of Internet use by the respondents, it was found that some categories were significantly related to less favourable health behaviours. Rare Internet users were less likely to undertake physical activity than nonusers (odds ratio, OR, 95% confidence interval, 95%CI 0.48, 0.28–0.83). Those using the Internet every day less frequently consumed fruit and vegetables (OR, 95%CI 0.64, 0.42–0.99). Internet use was also associated with more frequent consumption of alcohol (OR, 95%CI 1.65, 1.09–2.50 comparing nonusers with those accessing the Internet several times a week). Persons rarely using the Internet, but not those who accessed it at least a few times a week, possessed a lower health literacy than nonusers (OR, 95%CI 0.71, 0.52–0.97). Internet users were also more likely to assess their health status as unsatisfactory (OR, 95%CI 0.59, 0.42–0.82 comparing nonusers with those using the Internet daily). Finally, the use of the Internet was consistently associated with a lower prevalence of chronic conditions and disability, as well as less frequent visits to health care facilities. Conclusions In conclusion, in contrast to earlier findings, Internet use is not associated with favourable patterns of lifestyle or higher self-rated health in older Polish adults. However, persons with chronic conditions or disabilities less frequently declare the use of the Internet. It was also revealed that older adults and the elderly who make use of the Internet are less likely to utilise health services.
