The International Children's Digital Library: Description and analysis of first use

Abstract: In this paper we describe the first version of the International Children's Digital Library (ICDL). As a fiveyear research project, its mission is to enable children to access and read an international collection of children's books through the development of new interface technologies. This paper will describe the need for such research, our work in the context of other digital libraries for children, and an initial analysis of the first seven weeks of the ICDL's public use on the web.

“…The intergenerational design team approach goes a step further by involving children actively in the actual design process, employing what Druin has called "Cooperative Inquiry." Here children are treated as full design partners in the team alongside the adults (Druin et al, 2001(Druin et al, , 2003 The team of children and adults meets regularly with the goal of developing a prototype. Druin (2002) argues that when children are restricted to the role of informant they can only offer feedback without an opportunity to elaborate or build upon ideas: the intergenerational design team provides an opportunity to create rather than merely critique.…”

“…Use of OPACs (Borgman, Hirsch, Walter, & Gallagher, 1995;Solomon, 1993), CD-ROM and other electronic resources (Large, Beheshti, & Rahman, 2002;Large, Beheshti, Nesset, & Bowler, 2003), and the Internet and/or WWW (Bilal, 2000a(Bilal, , 2000b or digital libraries (Abbas, 2001;Druin, 2002, in press;Druin et al, 2003) by children has been investigated. 4 While information-seeking research is beyond the scope of this article, it still remains a critical piece of the representation puzzle and serves to inform researchers, metadata creators, and system developers of the unique needs of children.…”

The research team worked with children to design the interface, specialized search features, metadata scheme, and categories for classifi cation, access, and organization of the resources.…”

“…Many of the principles driving our system design are derived from this work. The International Children's Digital Library (ICDL) [8] builds on PhotoMesa by laying out children's book cover thumbnails in zoomable treemaps. Our work differs from the ICDL in several respects, including the use of hybrid treemaps, the specific modes of navigation supported, the ability to generate the collection automatically, and the accommodation of large, heterogeneous collections.…”
